Journey Across the Sea: Bali to Sumbawa

Seven days east from Bali through the Gili Islands and the Flores Sea to the jungles of Moyo and the whale sharks of Saleh Bay — a private phinisi crossing few ever make.

The Voyages Desk

Most travellers know Bali and stop there. East of it, across a few hundred kilometres of the Flores Sea, lies a string of islands almost no one reaches by land — turtle reefs off the Gilis, the volcanic crater lake of Satonda, the jungle trails of Moyo, and the warm bay of Saleh where whale sharks gather beneath the fishing bagans.

This crossing is the gentle introduction to an Indonesian yacht voyage: calmer water than the deep east, a wealth of snorkelling and diving, and the slow pleasure of watching Bali recede and Sumbawa rise. Your phinisi is a private floating villa — chef, dive master and crew aboard — anchoring each night somewhere new.

The sample below is how we’d shape a first seven-day passage, embarking in East Bali. Every charter is private and tailor-made: add nights, swap the diving for wellness, or bookend the sea with a Bali villa before and after. Tell the Voyages desk your dates and we build the route around them.

Watch Bali recede and Sumbawa rise — seven days of empty bays, turtle reefs and a warm sea where whale sharks gather at dawn.

Add a few nights in a Bali villa before you sail and after you fly home from Sumbawa, and the crossing becomes a complete Indonesian fortnight.

Good to know

Where does the Bali to Sumbawa voyage start and end?

A typical crossing embarks in East Bali (Padangbai/Candidasa) and disembarks at Sumbawa, from where you fly back via Lombok to Bali — or sail it in reverse. Charters are private and fully flexible.

What will we see on this route?

Turtle reefs off the Gili Islands, the volcanic crater lake of Satonda, jungle trails and waterfalls on Moyo Island, the steep Angel reef wall, and the whale sharks of Teluk Saleh (Saleh Bay).

When is the best time to sail Bali to Sumbawa?

The dry season, April to October, gives the calmest crossing and clearest water; whale-shark sightings in Saleh Bay are best in the dry months. We time each charter to conditions.

Is this voyage good for first-timers and families?

Yes — it is the gentlest of our crossings, with calm anchorages, easy snorkelling and the larger phinisi sleeping up to fourteen. The crew tailors each day to the group.

The Voyage, Day by Day

Seven days, a sample itinerary

Provided as inspiration — every charter is private and re-shaped around your dates, divers and pace before you sail.

  1. Day 1

    East Bali — embark

Met in East Bali and tendered to your phinisi in the overlooking bay. Settle in, a sumptuous first lunch under sail, and a sunset cocktail as the coast slips away.

  2. Day 2

    Gili Islands

Snorkel the turtle reefs off the Gilis, then an exclusive beach set-up and an afternoon by kayak and paddleboard. Dinner al fresco on the top deck as the vessel heads east.

  3. Day 3

    Crossing the Flores Sea

A day under sail across open water — deck hours, a chef’s lunch, a wellness session on the foredeck — with Sumbawa rising on the horizon by dusk.

  4. Day 4

    Moyo Island

Awake to the jungles of Moyo. An excursion through the lush trails and famed Moyo honey, then a dive along the steep Angel reef wall that drops into the blue.

  5. Day 5

    Satonda Island

A morning at Satonda’s otherworldly volcanic crater lake, ringed by forest, then snorkelling the fringing reef before cruising to position for the next dawn.

  6. Day 6

    Teluk Saleh — whale sharks

At first light, visit the bagans (traditional fishing platforms) of Saleh Bay for the chance to snorkel with the gentle whale sharks. A farewell dinner from the crew.

  7. Day 7

    Sumbawa — disembark

A final breakfast on the bow, a goodbye from the crew, and the transfer to Sumbawa Besar for your flight back via Lombok to Bali.
