Luxury Villas in Pererenan, Bali

North of Canggu proper, Pererenan is what Berawa was in 2015 — black-sand beach, rice paddies running to the road, a single warung row, and the kind of villa stays that disappear behind hedges. The new wave of restaurants opened here in 2024-25 and the area is finding its level.

The Pererenan brief

Canggu's quiet northern edge — rice paddies, dawn surf

North of Canggu proper, Pererenan is what Berawa was in 2015 — black-sand beach, rice paddies running to the road, a single warung row, and the kind of villa stays that disappear behind hedges. The new wave of restaurants opened here in 2024-25 and the area is finding its level.

The black-sand surf

Pererenan Beach is a 1.5 km curve of volcanic black sand, with three distinct breaks: a left at the river mouth (intermediate, working at most tides), a beach break in the middle (all levels), and a small reef at the south end (advanced, low tide only). The crowd is half of what Echo Beach gets, and the cars park on the road — there's no beach-club valet.

Most surfers walk down from their villa, which is the point.

Canggu's new restaurant row

Pererenan opened more restaurants in 2024-25 than any village its size has any business opening — and four of them are genuinely good. Maï (six-table fish counter, the chef trained at Septime), Bukit (Mason group, fire-kitchen and natural-wine bar), Tre Cucina (the Naples-style pizzeria with the 90-second oven), and Sa'mesa for slow lunches.

We hold tables most weeks. Maï and Bukit need a week's notice; the others take walk-ins after eight.

Designer villas that disappeared from the listings

Pererenan in 2024-25 became the area where Indonesian and Australian architects built their houses — concrete, teak, lap pools, walls of greenery instead of fences. Most of these were built as homes, not rentals, and only ten or twelve have crossed over to the short-let market. We track them.

Pererenan villas tend to be larger than equivalents in Berawa (more land, lower density), which keeps the per-bedroom rate honest.

Frequently asked

Pererenan questions

Is Pererenan part of Canggu?
Geographically yes — Pererenan is the northern half of greater Canggu, between Berawa and the Tukad Saba river. The administrative village of Pererenan has its own banjar (community council) and is technically separate from Canggu proper, but in everyday use 'Pererenan' is shorthand for 'the quiet north end of Canggu.'
Can I walk to Echo Beach from Pererenan?
Yes — 20 minutes south along the beach at low tide, 30 minutes by road. Most Pererenan guests prefer to stay on their own beach (less crowded) but a sunset walk to La Brisa at Echo and a scooter back is a common move.
How does Pererenan compare to Berawa?
Berawa: more developed, walking distance to Atlas and Finns, more nightlife, higher density. Pererenan: quieter, more rice paddies, better surf beach, the better restaurant openings of 2025. Both are 'Canggu' — but pick by the volume you want.
What's the best villa style for Pererenan?
The native style is open-pavilion architecture set in mature gardens — concrete, teak, exposed beams, deep eaves for the rain. The new builds (since 2022) tend to be more sculptural; the older ones lean traditional Balinese. We curate across both.
