The Place

Bali's cinematic cliff coast

The Bukit peninsula ("hill" in Indonesian) juts south from the Bali mainland — a raised limestone plateau ringed by vertical cliffs. Uluwatu sits on its south-western tip, where Ocean's Eleven-worthy villas cascade down cliff faces, and Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple watches the sun set into the Indian Ocean every evening since the 11th century.

Clifftop villa mornings

Uluwatu's signature view is from your own infinity pool — 100+ metres above the Indian Ocean, waves crashing in slow motion below. Villas here are architect-designed statements: Villa Latitude, The Istana, Villa Chintamani, and Alila Villas Uluwatu set the global benchmark.

Your morning: wake to the cliff roosters. Swim in your private pool. Breakfast on the deck — fresh fruit, oat bowls, Balinese coffee. By 9am the wind picks up and the kitesurfers begin along the outer cliffs.

Surf at the sacred breaks

Uluwatu is a pilgrimage site for serious surfers. The break at Uluwatu itself — first discovered in 1972 — remains one of the world's top ten. Padang Padang has hosted the Rip Curl Cup. Bingin is a reef break for intermediates. Impossibles offers long walls for longboarders. Balangan is more forgiving.

Boat charters take guests to the outer reefs at dawn. Our concierge arranges private boats from USD 180 per session, including boards, guide, and fresh coconuts. For beginners, we use the gentler beaches at Jimbaran or Dreamland.

Sunset at the temple and Single Fin

Every evening at Pura Luhur Uluwatu — the sea temple on the cliff's edge — a kecak fire dance unfolds as the sun sinks. 70 bare-chested men chant "cak-cak-cak" for 40 minutes while the Ramayana plays out. Unmissable the first time; book your tickets through your villa.

Then: Single Fin. The bar on the cliff at Suluban Beach that photographs every sunset. Sunday nights it becomes the island's biggest party. Other nights it's the surfers and their stories. Either way, it is the most Bali of Bali experiences.

Savaya, Ulu Cliffhouse, and the new generation

Savaya (formerly Omnia) is the showstopper — a cantilevered glass pool suspended 100m above Nyang Nyang beach, DJ sets, and the kind of lunch that turns into sunset cocktails. Ulu Cliffhouse offers a more refined alternative: upscale Mediterranean-Balinese cuisine with cliff views. El Kabron does Spanish fine dining on the cliff edge.

For honeymoon dinners: our concierge arranges a private cliff-edge table with candlelit path, bespoke tasting menu, and live acoustic music. Nothing quite prepares you for dinner with 200 metres of airspace below you.

Answers

Frequently asked

Is Uluwatu right for honeymooners?

Arguably Bali's most iconic honeymoon destination. Clifftop villas with private pools, dramatic ocean panoramas, Uluwatu Temple sunsets, and concierge-arranged cliff-edge romantic dinners. Most villas offer in-villa dining setups with floral arches, candlelit paths, and floating breakfast on request.

Can you swim at Uluwatu beaches?

Swimming at the main surf beaches (Uluwatu, Padang Padang) is for experienced swimmers/surfers only — strong currents, reef breaks. For swimming, head to Nyang Nyang (below Savaya) or Pandawa Beach — calmer, crystal water. Dreamland works too. Most villas have their own pools, of course.

How far is Uluwatu from the airport?

30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport via the new toll road. Traffic is rarely an issue. From Seminyak: 45 minutes to an hour. From Canggu: an hour+. Uluwatu's remoteness is why it feels peaceful.

Is Uluwatu good for families?

Yes for families with older children (6+). The cliff drops are real — younger toddlers need very close supervision. Villas with enclosed pools and gated gardens exist; ask our concierge for family-safe options. For very young children, we'd recommend Nusa Dua instead.

What's there to eat in Uluwatu?

Dining options are more limited than Seminyak, but quality is high: Bambu Indah restaurant, El Kabron, Ulu Cliffhouse, Savaya, Mosaic at Alila. For casual: Drifter, Moto, Bukit Cafe. Most guests do a couple of dinners in Seminyak during a week in Uluwatu.
