The Sanur brief

Calm lagoon, dawn jukungs, slow travel

Sanur is for travellers who want Bali at a different pace — the sea protected by a reef, the boardwalk a quiet cycle ride, sunrise over Nusa Penida instead of the south coast's famous sunset. Grandparents come here. Families with toddlers. People who already know.

The shallowest swim in Bali

Sanur's offshore reef breaks the swell long before it reaches the sand, so the lagoon is glassy at any tide. It's the only stretch of the south coast where small children can swim without an adult holding them, and the only one where grandparents in their seventies do their morning laps.

Most villas are a five-minute walk from a quiet entry — Sindhu, Mertasari, Karang. The boardwalk that runs the length of Sanur lets you walk or cycle from one to the next.

Dawn at five — jukungs and coffee

Sanur is one of the few Bali coasts that faces east, which means sunrise — not sunset — is the moment. By five AM the painted jukung outriggers are pulled out to the reef; by six the sky is doing thirty seconds of pink and the boats are silhouettes. Local fishermen come back with the night's catch around seven, and the cafés on the boardwalk open at eight.

Most of our Sanur guests skip the lie-in for the first three mornings, then sleep in the rest of the week. It's that good.

The Nusa Lembongan gateway

Sanur is the launch port for the fast boats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida — 30-minute crossings, hourly from 8 AM. The pier is at the southern end of Sanur and most of our Sanur guests do at least one day-trip to Penida (the Kelingking viewpoint, an early morning at Crystal Bay).

We arrange the boat, the driver on the other side, and the lunch table without you having to think about logistics.

Frequently asked

Sanur questions

Is Sanur good for older travellers?
Yes — Sanur is the Bali of choice for guests in their sixties and seventies. The boardwalk is flat, the lagoon is calm enough to swim at any age, the restaurants don't have stairs, and the staff at most villas have been in the same job for a decade or more. Medical clinics (BIMC, Siloam) are two minutes away.
Is Sanur boring compared to Canggu or Seminyak?
It's quieter — by choice. The beach clubs of the south coast are forty minutes away if you want them. Most Sanur guests find they don't. The trade-off is calmness for nightlife; few travellers regret it.
How easy is the day-trip to Nusa Penida?
Easy. Fast boats leave from Sanur Pier from 8 AM, the crossing is 30 minutes, and we arrange the driver and lunch on the Penida side. Most guests do Penida (Kelingking, Broken Beach) on day one of a trip, then Nusa Lembongan (snorkel + lunch) on day three.
Are there good restaurants in Sanur?
Genius Café (breakfast on the sea), Three Monkeys (long lunch), Plage de Bali (sunset cocktails), Char Ming (Vietnamese, locals' favourite). The dining scene is smaller than Seminyak's but the longevity rate is higher.
