How the festive fortnight changes a Bali villa’s rules — minimum stays, rates and the nights that go first — read from our own records on 3 October 2026.
Christmas and New Year are the two weeks of the Bali year that behave differently. The villas are the same houses and the staff the same people, but the rules change: minimum stays lengthen, nightly rates climb, and the nights between Christmas and New Year’s Eve go before the rest. This guide sets out what changes, using the rates, stay rules and calendars held in our own records on 3 October 2026, and how to plan around it.
How the festive season changes the rules
On 3 October 2026 we read the stay rules of every villa we list. For a stay beginning on 10 November, 544 of them asked for a two-night minimum and four asked for five nights or more. For a stay beginning on 28 December the picture changes: 112 asked for five nights or more, 13 of those for six or seven, and 157 asked for at least three. Most of the festive minimums come from the villas’ own booking calendars, which we read every few days, so a rule can change before you book; each villa page applies the current one to your dates.
Rates move further. Of the 326 villas whose nights on 10 November and 31 December are both priced in our records, 296 charge more for New Year’s Eve, 265 at least half as much again, and 125 at least double. Of the 201 villas whose rate changes between 15 December and 10 January, 167 charge the most for a night between 26 December and 1 January. Where a villa’s festive rate is not in our records, it is confirmed with the villa before anything is charged.
What sells out first
What goes first is the nights between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. On 3 October, 89 of the villas we list already showed 10 December as unavailable on their calendars; for 28 December the figure was 201, and the night of 29 December was the most taken of the season, at 204. By 7 January it was back to 92. The bigger houses were further ahead: more than a third of the villas with six bedrooms or more were already unavailable on New Year’s Eve, against fewer than three in ten of those with four bedrooms or fewer.
When to book
Book as early as you can, and with as much flexibility as you have. Our month-by-month guide to Bali suggests talking to the concierge about New Year in March rather than November; from October the choice narrows week by week, but it does not disappear. Moving the dates helps more than anything else. Of the 330 villas priced for both nights, 258 charge less on 19 December than on 28 December, and of the 214 priced on both 31 December and 5 January, 117 charge less on the 5th. A stay that ends on Christmas Day, or starts in the first week of January, can open up houses that are taken or dear over New Year’s Eve.
A big-group Christmas
For a family reunion, or three families together, an estate booked whole is the easiest way to keep everyone under one roof: one gate, one kitchen, one long table, and a door that closes for each couple. Ocean Palm Estate in Pererenan sleeps fourteen in seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and terrace, with a lap pool and a jetted spa pool, staff daily, and the beach about five minutes away by car. As of 3 October 2026 its rate for the whole estate is IDR 25,000,000 a night until 30 November, IDR 35,000,000 from 1 December, IDR 40,000,000 from 15 December, IDR 50,000,000 from 21 to 25 December and IDR 60,000,000 from 26 December to 3 January, easing to IDR 45,000,000 from 4 to 10 January. Arrivals from 16 December 2026 to 10 January 2027 need a stay of at least five nights.
For other houses that take a group, see our villas for large groups, or start from the area: Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu or Ubud.
Rain and the wet season
December and January fall in Bali’s wet season, which runs roughly from November to March. In practice that usually means heavy, short downpours, often in the afternoon or overnight, between long spells of sun; the island is at its greenest and the sea stays warm. Plan the beach for the morning, keep the afternoon loose, and choose a house with covered places to sit outdoors, so a storm is something you watch from a pavilion rather than wait out indoors.
Christmas lunch at home
The best Christmas table in Bali is often the one in the villa. Many villas can arrange a cook or a private chef, but whether the cooking is part of the rate or charged separately, and how the groceries are billed, depends on the house, so ask before you plan the menu; our guide to villas with a private chef explains the usual arrangements. At Ocean Palm a private chef can be arranged on request and meals are charged separately. Whatever the house, book the cooking when you book the stay: in the festive weeks it pays to ask early.
New Year’s Eve: Canggu, Seminyak or Uluwatu
Where you spend New Year’s Eve shapes the night more than the villa does. Canggu puts the beach clubs of Batu Bolong and Berawa a short drive away, with the traffic that comes with them. Seminyak keeps restaurants and bars close enough to walk between. Uluwatu is cliff country, where many villas sit high above the sea and the night is easily spent at home. On the night itself the roads near the beach clubs slow to a crawl, so many groups have dinner at home and go out late, or not at all.
To see how festive rates sit against the rest of the year, our Bali villa price index sets out what villas cost by area and size, and our guide to luxury villa rental in Bali covers what a rate includes and how booking works.
At Christmas in Bali, two days of flexibility are worth more than any discount.
Tell the concierge your dates, the size of the group and how flexible you can be. We check each house’s festive rules and confirm with the villa before anything is charged.
