Canggu used to be rice paddies and a handful of surf shacks. Surf at Batu Bolong

The signature Canggu morning: an early paddle at Batu Bolong, a gentle beach break that forgives beginners and suits longboarders. By seven the swell is often still clean and the temple on the rocks catches the first light. Echo Beach, a little further up the coast, suits stronger surfers with a punchier reef break.

Beach clubs by the sand

Finns Beach Club at Berawa is the showstopper, with its pools, its restaurants and sunsets that stop conversations. La Brisa at Echo Beach is built from old fishing-boat timber and feels like a shipwreck lounge from a Fitzgerald novel. The Lawn sits right on the sand at Canggu beach, its daybeds swinging in the breeze.

Eat, drink, repeat

How's the traffic in Canggu?

Honest answer: slow at rush hour, roughly 4 to 7pm, and the Canggu shortcut is notorious. Walk where you can. For anything more than ten minutes away, a Gojek or Grab scooter is often faster than a car. Book dinner at 5pm or 8pm to miss the worst of it.

Is Canggu good for remote work?

Yes. Canggu is one of Bali's main bases for people who work remotely, with coworking spaces and cafés built around a laptop. Wi-Fi differs from villa to villa, so if you need a fast connection, ask us to check the house you have in mind before you book.

Is the beach swimmable?

Yes, with care. Canggu's beaches are black volcanic sand with strong currents, so swim where lifeguards are on duty, as at Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Berawa. The undertow at Echo Beach can be serious at full tide. For calm water, use your villa pool, or go to Nusa Dua for beach swimming.

Where are the beachfront villas in Canggu?

Along the whole coast, from Seseh and Cemagi beyond Pererenan in the north-west to Berawa in the south-east.
